Death toll tops 100 in Myanmar ethnic strife

SITTWE, Myanmar (AP) ? The death toll from recent ethnic violence in Myanmar's western state of Rakhine has surpassed 100, an official said Friday, as the government warned that the strife risks harming the country's reputation as it seeks to install democratic rule.

Rakhine state spokesman Win Myaing said 112 people had been killed in six townships in clashes that began Sunday between members of the Buddhist Rakhine and the Muslim Rohingya communities. He said 72 people were reported injured, including 10 children.

The government announced earlier that almost 2,000 homes had been burned down in the conflict.

In June, ethnic violence in the state left at least 90 people dead and destroyed more than 3,000 homes. About 75,000 have been living in refugee camps ever since.

A resident of another township, Ramree, said there also was violence there Friday morning.

"There were some clashes between the two sides in Ramree this morning," Kyaw Win, 30, said by phone.

"Residents are very fearful of imminent attacks by the Muslim community because security presence is very little. We don't feel safe. We want the Bengalis to be moved away from the Rakhine community," Kyaw Win said. Rakhine prefer to use the term Bengali for Rohingya, whom they contend are not a distinct ethnic group.

Kyaw Win said that a few houses had been burned down but that no casualties were reported.

The mob violence has seen entire villages torched and has drawn calls worldwide for government intervention.

"As the international community is closely watching Myanmar's democratic transition, such unrest could tarnish the image of the country," said a statement from the office of President Thein Sein published Friday in the state-run Myanma Ahlin newspaper.

Thein Sein took office as an elected president last year, and has instituted economic and political liberalization after almost half a century of repressive military rule.

"The army, police and authorities in cooperation with local people will try to restore peace and stability and will take legal action against any individual or organization that is trying to instigate the unrest," the statement warned.

The long-brewing conflict is rooted in a dispute over the Muslim residents' origin. Although many Rohingya have lived in Myanmar for generations, they are widely denigrated as intruders who came from neighboring Bangladesh to steal scarce land.

The U.N. estimates their population in Myanmar at 800,000. But the government does not count them as one of the country's 135 ethnic groups, and so ? like neighboring Bangladesh ? denies them citizenship. Human rights groups say racism also plays a role: Many Rohingya, who speak a Bengali dialect and resemble Muslim Bangladeshis, have darker skin and are heavily discriminated against.

A statement issued late Thursday by the office of U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon described the latest violence as "deeply troubling." Ban called on Myanmar authorities "to take urgent and effective action to bring under control all cases of lawlessness."

"The vigilante attacks, targeted threats and extremist rhetoric must be stopped," Ban said. "If this is not done, the fabric of social order could be irreparably damaged and the reform and opening up process being currently pursued by the government is likely to be jeopardized."

In Washington, State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said the U.S. was deeply concerned about the reports and urged restraint.

In a hospital in Sittwe, the state capital not yet hit by the latest round of violence, an Associated Press photographer talked to four wounded people brought in from the affected areas. Aung Moe Khaing, 25, was wounded in an arm and a leg, saying he was shot Tuesday when soldiers dispersed the crowd.

Phyu Thein Maung, 39, from Yathetaung township, said he was shot in the buttocks.

"Muslims provoked us from inside their village and challenged us from their community, guarded by soldiers," he said. "People were very angry as they shot iron spikes at us with catapults and made abusive gestures. I was hit by a gunshot when soldiers dispersed the crowd."

There have been concerns in the past that soldiers were failing to protect the Rohingya community, but accounts this time from Rakhine villagers suggest that Myanmar's military may have been defending the Rohingya.

The crisis has proven a major challenge to Thein Sein's government and to opposition leader and Nobel Peace laureate Aung San Suu Kyi, who has been criticized by some outsiders as failing to speak out strongly against what they see as repression of the Rohingya.

The U.N. warned Thursday that the crisis had sent a new wave of refugees to seek shelter in camps already overcrowded with 75,000 people from the June violence.

Bangladesh has put its border guards on alert, fearing a new influx of Rohingya refugees.

On Thursday, Bangladesh border guards turned away 45 Rohingya trying to enter into Bangladesh by boats, said Lt. Col. Khalequzzaman, a border commander. Local police chief Selim Mohammad Jahangir said Friday that at least another 3,000 Rohingya Muslims had been spotted on about 40 boats on the Naaf River off Bangladesh's Tekhnaf coast.

He said the boats may try to enter Bangladesh, but "we have instructions not to let them come here."

Bangladesh says it's too poor to accept more refugees and feed them. Bangladesh is hosting about 30,000 Rohingya who fled Myanmar to escape government atrocities in 1991.

Jeremy Friedman Sees 5 Technologies Driving Innovation in Ed ...

Technology is changing education in a myriad of ways, according to the CEO of Schoology Jeremy Friedman. There are some techs, however, with the potential to really change the environment both in and out of the classroom ? and in an editorial for Forbes? CIO Network blog, Friedman names and describes them.

Cloud technologies will make a big difference to schools looking to bring down their infrastructure costs, Friedman believes. Instead of purchasing the hardware needed to support their teaching and collaborative platforms, schools can outsource these tasks to cloud providers. The ability to do that will also bolster blended and online learning efforts, as it will make academic materials accessible from anywhere in the world ? all without costing schools or districts extra resources. Not to mention it will make aggregating resources, not only on the school level, but also district and even state levels, a much simpler task.

Many education technology and software vendors are already making preparations for the wholesale move to the cloud, as many are now transitioning from selling stand-alone software applications to becoming platform providers. They see their goal as providing cross-platform APIs that allow app developers, even some from the schools or districts themselves, to customize the learning experience in the way best suited to individual circumstances.

This vendor collaboration and openness encourages rapid innovation and content sharing that ultimately benefits all stakeholders. It also begins to open new distribution models for new companies looking to gain scale quickly, and new business models for those with widespread scale and reach.

Any technology that is platform-agnostic will gain more favor going forward as money-pinched schools increasingly embrace ?bring your own device? policies, shifting the expense of purchasing hardware from themselves onto students. Products that can work equally well on iOS, Android and other common gadget operating systems will become much easier for districts to justify than those that require that schools use only one or a family of devices.

Adaptive learning is not necessarily new, but it is making its way directly to individuals in a more widespread fashion than ever before. Adaptive learning is popular because it offers students a more personalized learning experience. Technically, it is an educational method that uses computers as interactive teaching devices. Content and instruction are tailored to the skill level and needs of each student, which simultaneously helping to improve the teaching process in an automated manner.

The last one, gamification, has almost an equal number of supporters and detractors. It?s hard to argue with the fact that gaming develops certain skills considered key in improved learning outcomes. However, it is also often blamed for short attention spans in children that prevents them from settling down to long and tedious tasks often necessary for mastering a topic. Still, game-based learning is being embraced by many organizations that have a great deal of influence on education policy, such as the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation which recently funded the Games, Learning and Assessment Lab.

According to the organization, GLASS Lab is ?based on the understanding that digital games and simulations can support student learning by providing immediate feedback for students, teachers and parents on students? progress toward established learning goals.?

Ex-manager of Britney Spears says he was punched

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Britney Spears' ex-manager described from the witness stand Wednesday a scene of domestic warfare, saying the superstar's father chased him around a kitchen, punched him and threatened his life.

Sam Lutfi, who is suing Spears' parents for defamation, testified while they watched from across the courtroom.

He denied accusations made in a book by Lynne Spears that he was a Svengali who became the gatekeeper of her daughter's world, locking her parents out of her life.

He contends he was a benevolent caretaker who protected Britney during her highly publicized meltdown.

Lutfi's direct testimony concluded in dramatic fashion as he was overcome by tears while describing the aftermath of the publication of the book.

"After the book came out, there was a huge spike of death threats that were pretty bad," he testified. "People I know were shunning me. Websites were created to kill me. People wished I was dead. People wished my family ... "

He didn't finish the sentence because he was crying.

"How did it make you feel," asked his attorney, Joseph Schleimer.

"Depressed, anxious and suicidal," Lutfi testified.

Lutfi told of days leading to Britney's hospitalization at a psychiatric unit, and jurors saw a video of the star ordering him around outside her home hours before she was taken away.

She was demanding that he let her drive her car and told him to get in the passenger seat. The scene outside her home was surreal, with TV lights and paparazzi surrounding her.

Lutfi said Britney feared her father Jamie Spears and fled her home when she heard he was coming. Lutfi said the father confronted him twice and punched him on the second visit.

"Jamie came barging into the house. He lunged at me and chased me around the kitchen island. He was spitting, yelling, shouting at me, and said I had hurt his daughter and he was going to beat the hell out of me and I'd better get out of the house," Lutfi testified.

After 10 minutes, he said, Jamie Spears was escorted out by security guards. But the next morning, he got into the house again and the battle resumed, Lutfi said.

"He cornered me in the kitchen, punched me in the solar plexus and threatened to kill me," Lutfi testified.

"How did it feel?" Schleimer asked.

"It hurt," Lutfi replied.

Asked what he did, he said, "I ran to the game room and locked myself in."

A lawyer for Spears said in opening statements that the father never physically assaulted Lutfi and merely touched him on the chest.

With Schleimer reading excerpts from Lynne Spears' book, Lutfi methodically denied every one of her accusations.

"Were you in complete control of Britney's life?" Schleimer asked.

"No," Lutfi said firmly.

"Did you attempt to keep Britney's family away?" he was asked.

"To the contrary, sir," Lutfi answered.

He denied cutting wires to phone lines in the house and hiding Britney's cellphones. He also said he never drugged the superstar.

Court proceedings ended for the day and were set to resume Thursday.

Lutfi is suing for damages for defamation and for a 15 percent share of the millions of dollars Britney made while he was with her.

The singer remains under the conservatorship of her father and has been told by a judge not to attend or testify in the trial.

She has made a remarkable comeback from her hard times, now acting as a judge on TV's "The X Factor."

Pope names 6 cardinals, none from Italy

VATICAN CITY (AP) ? Pope Benedict XVI named six new cardinals on Wednesday, adding prelates from Lebanon, the Philippines, Nigeria, Colombia, India and the United States to the ranks of senior churchmen who will elect his successor.

Among them is Archbishop James Harvey, the American prefect of the papal household whom the pope also named archpriest of a Roman basilica.

As prefect, Harvey was the direct superior of the pope's former butler, Paolo Gabriele, who was convicted Oct. 6 of stealing the pope's private papers and leaking them to a reporter in the greatest Vatican security breach in modern times. The Vatican spokesman denied Harvey was being removed from the Vatican because of the scandal.

Benedict, 85, announced the new cardinals during his weekly general audience and said they would be formally elevated Nov. 24. The nominations help even out the geographic distribution of cardinals, which had tilted heavily toward Europe in the last few consistories and Italy in particular.

With the new cardinals installed Nov. 24, there will be 120 "princes" of the church under age 80 and thus eligible to vote in a conclave to elect a new pope. Europe still has the most, with 62. But with the new additions, the College of Cardinals is a tad more multinational: Latin America will have 21; North America, 14; Africa, 11; Asia, 11; and Oceana, one.

Aside from Harvey, the new cardinals are: Archbishop of Abuja, Nigeria, John Olorunfemi Onaiyekan; Archbishop of Bogota, Colombia, Ruben Salazar Gomez; Archbishop of Manila, Philippines, Luis Antonio Tagle; Patriarch of Antioch of the Maronites in Lebanon, His Beatitude Bechara Boutros Rai; and the major Archbishop of the Trivandrum of the Siro-Malankaresi in India, His Beatitude Baselios Cleemis Thottunkal.

Absent from the list is German Archbishop Gerhard Ludwig Mueller, whom the pope named in July to head the Vatican's powerful Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. Also missing is Dublin Archbishop Diarmuid Martin, who has ruffled feathers in the Vatican because of his outspoken criticism of the church's handling of the sex abuse scandal.

In the past, prelates in line for the red hats worn by cardinals have sometimes had to wait their turn if too many were chosen for the Vatican ceremony at which prelates are formally elevated. At six, though, the Nov. 24 consistory will be the smallest in years.

It will be unique in that not a single Italian or European will be elevated, perhaps an intentional response to criticism that the European-heavy College of Cardinals no longer reflects the face of the Catholic Church, which is growing in Africa and Asia but is in crisis in much of Europe.

Harvey, a native of Milwaukee, became prefect of the papal household in 1998 after serving for less than a year as a top administrator, the assessor, in the Vatican's secretariat of state. His office organizes the pope's schedule, and one of his most visible duties was is to join the pope at his weekly general audiences and escort visiting dignitaries through the Apostolic Palace to the pope's library.

Gabriele, 46, worked as an usher in the Vatican's secretariat of state before coming to work for Harvey. In 2006, Gabriele was named Benedict's butler, replacing Pope John Paul II's longtime butler, Angelo Gugel.

In announcing the new cardinals, Benedict said he was naming Harvey archpriest of St. Paul's Outside the Walls, one of the Vatican's basilicas in southern Rome.

Vatican spokesman the Rev. Federico Lombardi denied any connection between the leaks scandal and Harvey's new posting, saying it was "more than normal" that after 14 years as prefect, Harvey would be named a cardinal. That said, Harvey's predecessor, Cardinal Dino Monduzzi, was named a cardinal once he retired as prefect after reaching age 75.

Harvey, 63, is well shy of the normal retirement age for bishops and Vatican officials.

The timing of the move is also remarkable. Just Tuesday, the Vatican tribunal that convicted Gabriele issued its written explanations for reaching its verdict, saying the theft caused "reprehensible" damage to the pontiff, the Holy See and the entire Catholic Church.

Lombardi said he "never would have imagined" that a face-saving promotion was behind Harvey's move to St. Paul's Outside the Walls.

The Vatican, however, has taken such actions in the past. Last week, Benedict transferred to the United States the No. 2 official in the Vatican's office for religious orders, Archbishop Joseph Tobin, who had spoken out in support of American nuns in the wake of a Vatican crackdown. Tobin is now the archbishop of Indianapolis.

Last year, Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano, the then-No. 2 administrator of the Vatican City State, begged the pope not to be transferred after exposing corruption that cost the Vatican millions of dollars. He was named the pope's envoy to Washington soon thereafter.

Blood chromosome differences are linked to pancreatic cancer

ScienceDaily (Oct. 23, 2012) ? A new study shows that a blood marker is linked to pancreatic cancer, according to a study published October 23 by scientists at the University of Wisconsin Carbone Cancer Center and Mayo Clinic.

First author Dr. Halcyon Skinner, assistant professor of population health sciences at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, says the study is the first time pancreatic cancer risk has been linked to differences in telomeres' length in blood cells.

"This suggests a new avenue to identify those with pancreatic cancer or those at risk of developing the cancer in the future,'' he says.

Skinner's colleagues at Mayo Clinic took blood samples from more than 1,500 people -- 499 of them with a diagnosis of pancreatic cancer and 963 of them cancer-free control subjects. Specifically, the scientists were interested in the length of the telomeres -- the end caps on chromosomes -- found in white blood cells. They found a direct relationship with the risk of pancreatic cancer: the shorter the telomeres, the more likely a person was to have pancreatic cancer.

Telomeres maintain the stability of genes, and are known to shorten with age as cells divide. People of the same chronological age can have vastly different telomere lengths. In other words, some people's cells can by viewed as biologically older than cells from other people the same age.

"We know that people with many factors that are classically unhealthy also tend to have shorter telomeres. Those who have had stressful lives, exposed to chronic inflammation, have poor glucose control or smoked cigarettes tend to have shorter telomeres, and that can set the stage for genetic damage,'' Skinner explains.

Shortened telomeres in the blood have already been associated with other types of cancer, including colon cancer.

"We found the same relationship with pancreatic cancer, and for the vast majority of our participants, there was a direct linear relationship," he says, "the shorter the telomere, the higher the likelihood of pancreatic cancer."

But because shorter telomere length is also associated with the development of other cancers and other diseases of aging, measurement of telomere length alone is not a specific marker for pancreatic cancer.

Dr. Lisa A. Boardman, of Mayo Clinic, who led the overall study, says that future studies need to address if telomere length and other markers of pancreatic cancer should be combined to create a test that could be used clinically.

Facxtbox: Political risks to watch in Lebanon

BEIRUT (Reuters) - The killing of a top intelligence officer in a Beirut car bomb has thrown Lebanon into fresh crisis, exposing political and sectarian rifts, highlighting its vulnerability to conflict in neighboring Syria and raising fear of more assassinations.

In addition to the political standoff between Prime Minister Najib Mikati's Hezbollah-backed government and its opponents, Lebanon has seen sporadic violence - particularly in the northern city of Tripoli - linked to the conflict in Syria.

Cross-border shelling and incursions by Syrian forces increased over the summer, while support for the mainly Sunni Muslim rebels among their fellow Sunnis in Lebanon has led to a steady flow of arms and rebels into Syria.

The deteriorating political and security environment has hurt the economy. After growing at 7-8 percent for four years, it slowed sharply last year to around 3 percent and is likely to grow by less than 3 percent this year, the Central Bank says.

Here are some of the main risks to watch in Lebanon:

POLITICAL SHOWDOWN

The opposition blamed Syria for the assassination of Brigadier-General Wissam al-Hassan and called on Mikati to resign, saying he was too close to Damascus and its ally Hezbollah - which is part of Mikati's government.

Mourners tried to storm government offices after Hassan's funeral, protesters blocked roads across the country and a prominent opposition politician said there could be no dialogue to resolve the political crisis before Mikati stepped down.

Mikati himself has said he wants to stand aside for a "consensus government" to be formed, but that President Michel Suleiman asked him to remain in office to allow time for consultation and prevent the country sliding into chaos.

What to watch:

- Mikati's coalition government relies on support from Druze leader Walid Jumblatt, who has condemned Assad's crackdown in Syria. If he pulled out of the government in protest, he would bring it down.

- Widening differences over Syria between Mikati and the president, who has taken a gradually tougher stance towards Lebanon's powerful neighbor.

SPILLOVER FROM SYRIA

Officials fear further assassinations after Hassan's killing, which they linked to his investigation into a bomb plot allegedly hatched in Damascus to stoke violence in Lebanon.

More direct spillover from the conflict in neighboring Syria, where activists say 30,000 people have been killed in the 19-month-old uprising against President Bashar al-Assad, has taken place for months on Lebanon's borders.

Syrian forces have fired shells or crossed into Lebanon dozens of times, residents near the poorly defined frontier say, prompting Lebanon's government to protest formally to Damascus for the first time in July.

The Syrian crisis, which pits mainly Sunni rebels against a president from the Alawite faith linked to Shi'ite Islam, has exacerbated sectarian tensions in Lebanon and fears of a fresh conflict in a country that suffered a 1975-1990 civil war.

In the northern city of Tripoli, deadly clashes have broken out between Sunni Muslims and Alawites - as well as between pro-Assad and anti-Assad Sunnis.

Shi'ite Hezbollah, which is allied to Assad, has strongly supported the Syrian president. It denies sending fighters to join his forces, but has held high-profile funerals for members killed inside Syria, according to security sources. Hezbollah's opponents say it is dragging Lebanon into the conflict.

What to watch:

- Growing tension and instability in Tripoli or Beirut

- Increasingly visible Hezbollah role in Syria

CONFRONTATION WITH ISRAEL

Iranian-backed Hezbollah has warned that any Israeli strike on its patron Iran over Tehran's nuclear program would inflame the Middle East. Many believe that Hezbollah, which fought a 34-day war with Israel in 2006, would once again go to war.

The group said in October it launched a drone which flew over Israel before being shot down by a missile.

What to watch:

- Prospects for Israeli strike on Iran

- Border clashes

ECONOMY

The civil war in Syria and Lebanon's own instability have cut economic growth. Tourism, a main source of revenue, has been hit hard with two consecutive summer seasons disrupted and the financial sector - a pillar of the economy - has also slowed.

Political deadlock means no government has managed to get a budget passed in parliament since 2005, one of the reasons behind the lack of long-term economic planning for desperately needed investment in infrastructure and power generation.

Finance Minister Mohammad Safadi's draft budget for 2013 projects the deficit will narrow to $3.11 billion from a predicted $3.69 billion this year.

But that is based on an optimistic forecast that the cabinet - if it remains in office - will approve higher taxes including a VAT rise and levies on profit from real estate sales.

If those revenues do not materialize, the projected increase in expenditure will push the country further into debt and could halt the gradual fall in debt as a proportion of GDP from an eye-watering high of nearly 170 percent in 2007.

What to watch:

- Slowing economic growth and continued budget deficits could start pushing up debt

Going Extreme on Classic Michigan Trails

Are these guys crazy! Covering the 40-mile Lakeshore Trail in Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore or the Greenstone Ridge Trail at Isle Royale in less than a day! Good luck and I'll see you at the end.

I received two emails recently from what only can be described as ?extreme trail users,? people who push it to the limits and then some. The first came from Roy Krantz of the Midland Hiking Club. In 2003, Roy and a friend hiked the entire Lakeshore Trail in Pictured Jim DuFresne Jim DuFresne Rocks National Lakeshore ? 42.4 miles from Grand Marais to Munising ? in one day. Or 14 hours and three minutes to be exact. Extreme or just plain crazy? Before I could decide Roy dropped me a line with his latest challenge: In an effort to figure out the next hardest thing to try, my crazy buddies and I are planning a non-stop yo-yo hike of the Lakeshore Trail at Pictured Rocks for this fall. This year, we?ll be starting in Munising hiking to Grand Marais and then back to Munising in 28-30 hours (hopefully). I want to make sure that I go far enough to make it official but not any farther than I have to. A woman at the park told me that the official starting and ending points are Munising Falls and the Grand Sable Visitor Center. Is that your understanding? Can you help? Roy My reply: Roy, you are crazy but if I can help with that insanity, I?ll try. I then went on to say it has always been my understanding that the Lakeshore Trail went from the Grand Sable Visitor Center to Munising Falls because it was set up soon after the park was created in 1966, meaning it predates the North Country Trail, which connects to it at each end. A backpacker on the Lakeshore Trail. If you?re crazy, Roy has posted a You Tube video, inviting other hikers to join him and his buddies. It?s pretty funny but I?ll pass. A few weeks latter Eric Charette sent me an email with questions about the 42-plus mile Greentsone Ridge Trail on Isle Royale National Park: As an ultrarunner and having grown up in the UP and graduated from MTU, I have been fascinated with running the Greenstone Ridge Trail. From my research, it looks like the fastest known time (FKT) from Windigo to Lookout Louise is 10 hours 17 minutes. Having just run rim to rim to rim in the Grand Canyon for fun in 11 hours (41 miles) I think that I can run the GRT in well under 10 hours. Anyway, my questions are numerous, but to start I need to know if this travel schedule is possible. I have researched the options a hundred times over and as an engineer this is a complex problem to solve! Eric I answered the questions as best I could and I think Eric is, pardon the pun, off and running. His plan is to run from Windigo along the Greenstone Ridge Trail to its east end at Lookout Louise this July. Because Lookout Louise is a rather isolated spot in the park, his support crew is going to rent a canoe and paddle across Tobin Harbor to meet him at the finish and take him back to Rock Harbor Lodge where they have booked a room for the evening. His main concern will be how much weight he?ll need to carry while running, particularly water. He plans to carry have 130 ounces of fluids but will also have a water filter in case he runs out. I?ve hiked the Greenstone Ridge Trail almost a dozen times. It is truly one of Michigan?s classic trails. But I?ve always hiked it, taking the usual four to five days to complete the foot path that spans from one end of Isle Royale to the other and hauling along some 40-pounds of gear to spend the night in the backcountry. To me, the beauty of either the Greenstone or the Lakeshore Trail is the length of them that allows you to escape into the backcountry for days at a time. Only then do I slip into the natural rhythm that is long distance hiking, where there are no deadlines other then setting up your tent before dark (and sometimes not even that). You eat when you?re hungry; you take a break when you?re tired. You move at your own pace because all you have to do by the end of the day is to reach the next backcountry campsite. Only by being out in the woods for so long do I feel spiritually refreshed when I return home. But my hat is off to Roy and Eric and I?ll be following their escapades closely to see how they do. You can too by checking into Roy?s web site (www.roykranz.com) and Eric?s (www.ericcharette.com) to keep tabs on them and then cheer them on at the finish line. Editor?s Note: Jim DuFresne has covered both these trails in his guidebooks; Isle Royale National Park: Foot Trails & Water Routes and Backpacking in Michigan. You can order the books through the MichiganTrailMaps.com e-shop at www.michigantrailmaps.com/store.html.

National Geographic Society has chronicled scientific expeditions, explorations, archaeology, wildlife and world cultures for more than 100 years, amassing a collection of 11.5 million photos and original illustrations. A small selection of that massive archive ? 240 pieces spanning from the late 1800s to the present ? will be sold at Christie's in December at "The National Geographic Collection: The Art of Exploration" auction, and is expected to bring in about $3 million, the first time any of the institution's collection has been sold.

WSJ Poll: Romney-Obama: It's A Tie: 47-47% - Business Insider

mitt romney, barack obama, hofstra debateNew poll out from WSJ saying it's an absolute dead heat tie: 47%-47% in the Presidential race.

Among likely voters, the candidates are now tied, 47% to 47%, in a race that appears on track to be one of the closest in U.S. history.

Mr. Romney has pulled abreast of the president for the first time all year in the Journal poll, erasing a three-point lead among likely voters that Mr. Obama had in late September and a five-point lead earlier that month. Mr. Romney's surge followed his strong debate performance in Denver early this month and a contentious second debate with Mr. Obama last week.

Among Registered Voters, Obama still leads 49-44%, according to the poll.

This WSJ poll is in line with most polls, with the exception of Gallup, which still has Romney with a 6 point lead.

Obama touts positive signs in housing market

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Eager to take note of signs of recovery, President Obama is drawing attention to improvements in the housing industry while keeping up pressure on Republicans to back policies the White House says would help struggling homeowners refinance their debts.

"One of the heaviest drags on our recovery is getting lighter," Obama said Saturday in his weekly radio and Internet address. "Now we have to build on the progress we've made and keep moving forward."

Obama cited an increased pace in construction of single-family houses and apartments in September. The Commerce Department said this week that last month's construction pace was the fastest in more than four years. Home sales are also up compared with last year, though sales dipped in September from August's two-year high.

With the economy still the dominant issue of the presidential campaign, Obama has been counting on voters believing that conditions are improving. But even indicators that are favorable to Obama still don't signal a strong recovery.

Obama conceded that too many mortgage holders are still under water, owing more than their homes are worth, and blamed congressional Republicans for not passing legislation he proposed in February that would lower lending rates for millions of borrowers. Republicans have objected, citing among other things the estimated $5 billion to $10 billion cost of the proposal.

Obama urged listeners to contact their members of Congress to push for the plan's passage.

"Let's be honest ? Republicans in Congress won't act on this plan before the election," Obama said. "But maybe they'll come to their senses afterward if you give them a push."

In the Republican address, Rep. Jeff Flake of Arizona said Obama had inherited a fragile economy, "but he's done little to improve it."

Flake, who is running for the Senate from Arizona, accused the Obama administration of regulatory overreach, citing examples in his own state to bar mining on certain lands, impose expensive requirements on power plants and threatening to require hotels and resorts to install lifts in pools and spas.

He called on Senate Democrats to pass a budget. "As bad as our fiscal challenges are, it's not too late," he said. "The bell has rung and it is time for us to get to work."

WW2 Veteran Had All This Shrapnel In His Knee

I love good World War II stories. They are always fascinating—although (too) often sad and dramatic. Sometimes, though, they are simply amazing. Like the tale of Ronald Brown, a soldier who stepped on a land mine in France and lived in silent pain with a shocking 6 ounces (170 grams) of shrapnel in his knee. He didn't mention it once. "It's a freak accident. We're not going waste energy and time on being angry," said Josh Lefevers, Gage's father.

Lefevers and his wife, Jessica, greeted hundreds of people Tuesday night for Gage's visitation in Gastonia.

"If we're going to spend all day talking about who to blame and stuff, we're not going to be taking care of our daughter and taking care of ourselves," said Jessica Lefevers.

Josh and Jessica Lefevers say Gage was a loving son, who loved playing with his older sister.

"He was awesome. I could have the worst day in the world and as soon as I came home, he'd make me laugh, no matter what," Josh Lefevers said.

Meanwhile, state health officials say the number of E. coli cases associated with the Cleveland County Fair continues to rise across the state and even across the state line.?Health officials said Wednesday afternoon?the total?had risen to 61, including Lefevers.

By 2 p.m. Thursday, that number had risen to 81, officials said.?

This outbreak follows one at the state fair in Raleigh last year where 25 people were sickened there.

The outbreak has now spread from Cleveland Co. into Catawba,?Gaston, Lincoln, Mecklenburg?and Union counties in North Carolina. York and Cherokee counties in South Carolina?also have?three confirmed case of E. coli.

Dorothea Wyant, Cleveland County's Health Director, says "it's frustrating and it's confusing because you want answers and you want quick answers so can stop it and tell what it is".

Wyant says they've interviewed about?dozens of?people trying to pinpoint the source of the contamination. She says according to the latest analysis they don't think food is the cause.

Wyant says "everyone we've interviewed - and has gotten a history of food they've eaten - had folks with them that ate the same thing and did not get sick".

Health officials said as of Tuesday afternoon - while they're not 100% certain - the analysis shows the source was probably the petting zoo. Wyant says state health officials told her "more people got sick who went to the petting zoo". She says the bacteria can be carried from place to place which would explain why some who didn't go the petting zoo became ill.

Health officials say one of the?81 people with the bacteria did not attend the Cleveland County Fair. A 20-month old baby went to the fair and contracted E. coli. While taking care of her sick baby, the child's mother became sick. The mother did not go to the fair.

Even Sheriff Alan Norman's teenage son contracted E. coli while working with the animals at the fair.

Since last year's outbreak State fair organizers invested 2-hundred thousand dollars in improvements to try and keep people from getting sick.

Many include keeping people away from animals, but not all of them.?

Kevin White says he always tries to make it out. His family enjoys the furry faces and this makes 12 straight years that he and his family have made a day of it at the state fair.

There are some things that are quite noticeable, such as the barriers between fair goers and livestock.

More room between food vendors and animal exhibits. Better signage and lighting at hand washing stations.?

Brian Long said "you get a lot of people together there's the potential for germs to be exchanged. You throw animals into that mix there's also the potential for germs to be transmitted"?

Long says that the first thing you should do when you leave that exhibit is wash your hands?

More than two dozen people got sick at the state fair last year.

Little Hunter Tallent from Shelby was one of them.

He spent more than two weeks in the hospital when e coli bacteria shut down his kidneys.

Hunter's mom Lindsay Tallent says "It's really sad that we've had to come this far, that we can't play with the animals anymore, but in the long run it is a very good thing to help keep away any spread of diseases or keep any families from having to deal with what we've dealt with.

It's these types of improvements that local fairs may soon invest in.

Six kids were hospitalized after an E. coli outbreak this past week and the common link is they all attended the Cleveland County fair.

Those symptoms include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and a low-grade fever.?

If you're sick and went to the Cleveland County fair health officials say you should let your doctor know immediately.

DEVON'S FINEST AT FOOD AND DRINK DEVON AWARDS | This is ...

Many of Devon's leading producers, hospitality venues and retailers came together on Monday 8 October to celebrate the very best Devon has to offer at the annual Food and Drink Devon Awards 2012.

Held at The Best Western Tiverton Hotel, Tiverton, the awards ceremony was the culmination of an extensive judging process which saw 74 companies enter and 192 products blind tested in the quest to find Devon's best.

  1. Hamish Bury (left), presenter Michael Smith (centre), The Venus Company and Chairman of Food and Drink Devon and Anna Bury (right), Eversfield Organic, Winner of Winners.

  2. Angela Valder, @ Angela?s (left) and presenter Michael Smith (right), The Venus Company and Chairman of Food and Drink Devon, Outstanding Contribution

  3. Jo Evans, Figgy?s Puddings (left) and presenter Louisa Newman, The Venus Company (right), Best Packaging

The evening's awards, which were compered by David Fitzgerald, began with the Devon Producer Awards, sponsored by The Venus Company. As part of the judging process, 13 companies were named as Gold Award winners in the Devon Producer Awards including Luscombe Drinks, Riverford Farm Foods and West Country Kitchen.

After a thorough testing process, the title of Best Producer went to Eversfield Organic, who also achieved two Gold Awards for their Organic Dry-Cure Back Bacon and Organic Rib-Eye Steak and were eventually crowned Winner of Winners.

Eversfield Organic is a family-run business that has been delivering the finest organic meat to households throughout the UK for 10 years and has become a trusted name for the highest quality organic meat. Overlooking the Dartmoor National Park in North Devon, Eversfield Organic credits the Devon countryside for being the ideal location to rear its organic livestock.

Their pedigree herd of organic Aberdeen Angus cattle is made up of some of the last remaining 'native' cows left in the world. Their breeding program, with the support of the Rare Breeds Society, allows them to deliver the best marbled organic beef with the finest taste and texture. Their organic pork is derived from their rare breed Large Black sows and Large White boar, producing the finest organic bacon, roasting joints and cuts.

The judges found their dry-cure bacon to be 'sweet, with a strong pork flavour' and that they 'couldn't help but eat it all'. Eversfield's rib-eye steak was described as 'an excellent steak, with fantastic flavour and a sweet and slightly smoked aroma'.

During the judging process a new award category was created to recognise some of the fantastic examples of packaging used by Devon producers, with Figgy's Pudding winning the Best Packaging Award for its Christmas pudding.

Based in Exeter, husband and wife Richie and Jo Evans started making Christmas puddings at home, giving extras away to friends as presents. Then, after such glowing feedback, extensive research and a lot of pudding tasting, the duo opened for business in 2007. All of their puddings are made by hand in their small bakery near Exeter.

Following the Producer Awards, the evening's accolades moved onto the Taste of Devon Awards sponsored by Luscombe Drinks. Entered by 23 companies, the awards set out to find Devon's best caf?; best restaurant, pub or bistro and the best fine dining restaurant.

The first winner in this category was Bel Green, a little caf? / bistro located on Madgalen Street in Exeter which won the Best Caf? title after judges described it as 'a great experience with food quality far in excess of the sector norm, with home-made, locally-sourced, wonderful food'.

Next up was Noel Corston @ EX34, Woolacombe who took the title of Best Restaurant, Bistro or Pub with judges describing its food as excellent with special praise reserved for their herb coated fish, which was considered to be perfect in balance and taste.?

The Horn of Plenty, a country house hotel and restaurant based in Gulworthy near Tavistock, took home the title of Best Fine Dining Restaurant. With a business spanning over forty years, the restaurant has achieved an excellent reputation for its fine dining. The judges said that the food was 'fantastic and the service welcoming and attentive'.

The third category of the evening was the Devon's Retailers Awards, sponsored by Stephens Scown, which named Hallwood Farm Shop as Best Retailer. Based in Okehampton, the farm shop is run by husband and wife team Richard and Ruth whose philosophy of 'a mini farmers' market every day' secured the award.

The evening's Outstanding Contribution accolade was awarded to Angela @ Angela's Restaurant whose 'outstanding service' set her apart from others.? Located in the heart of Exeter, the restaurant is passionate about their food and how it should be experienced. The judges found the service to be 'fabulous' and credited the restaurant for its very good use of Devon products.

Michael Smith, Chairman of Food and Drink Devon, said: "We're delighted to host our first ever independent Food and Drink Devon Awards to celebrate Devon's wonderful produce and have been truly overwhelmed by the standard of entries. Over the course of the past few months, a team of almost 35 judges have blind tasted 192 products and visited 23 hospitality establishments and 13 retailers."

"We wanted there to be real value in our awards for members, regardless of whether they win. Whilst rigorous, our judging had been very honest ? both in terms of what is great about our members, and where things can be improved. "

"Devon is blessed with such amazing produce and is renowned for it across the country. Yet as a county, we often fail to appreciate the abundance of great produce available on our doorstep. We hope that these awards, and the work of Food and Drink Devon as a whole, will help to promote all that's great about our local food and drink."

This year's awards were the first time that Food and Drink Devon, a member organisation of around 260 companies, have run their own independent awards. Recognised as a badge of prestige amongst Devon's food industry, Food and Drink Devon has established the annual awards as part of the annual food and drink sector's award season.

Food and Drink Devon represents members of like-minded businesses who are dedicated to providing and supporting locally produced food and drink. Dating back to the 1990s, Food and Drink Devon was created after the merging of the South Hams Food and Drink Association and the South Devon and Dartmoor Food Group in January 2008.
