Cat Supplies at Online for Pets | xxikids1st.org | Space Current ...

Posted on February 10, 2012 by admin

People who are owned by their cats understand the magnitude of shopping for kittens and cats where anything can be found related to felines. Whilst there are most likely many local pet stores to shop at, these stores are geared towards serving a broad range of pet so there will obviously be a small selection for each species. Consequently, cat owners are increasingly searching for sources of cat supplies online where everything is in one place and priced affordably. As a matter of fact, when ordering more than ?50, some online pet suppliers may also offer free speedy shipping.

When it comes to cat supplies there are a number of different categories in which to find the perfect product. Most people think of cat supplies as being simply grouped by foods, litter boxes/accessories and perhaps toys. There are so many other types of cat products on the market which arent readily available in local pet shops because of lack of space. From grooming products to feline medical supplies, online stores offer a much wider selection. Instead of having one or two cat scratchers, for example, there is a whole line of scratchers from designer products to simple pedestals which fit any budget large or small.

There are numerous other cat toys available but where many people tend to land is on cat bedding products because cats tend to sleep by day and prowl by night. With any number of fashionable cat beds on the market, kitty has a comfy place to snooze that also complements the decor of any room. From soft and comfy cat beds to warm and cuddly cat blankets, there is sure to be something for every cat under the sun, no matter how pernickety. Some cats choose to sleep out in the open whilst others want somewhere dark and private. This is not a problem because cat beds come in a wide range of heights, fabrics and sizes.

When browsing though the onlineforpets.co.uk website, many cat lovers are amazed at the broad selection of cat supplies available. There are actually nine product categories available from beds to grooming products which simply are not available in local stores. Toys, carriers, hammocks, scratchers, play bags, blankets and cat collars are also available and nowhere is there such a large selection on just one site. With top manufacturers such as Gor Pets, Nina Ottosson, Kong, Company of Animals and Pet Head being represented, there is something to delight every cat at prices its owner can afford.

When it comes to being boss, cats will instantly inform you who is the head of the family as they are undoubtedly amongst the most clever and extremely independent. After being trained by a cat it is readily apparent what its likes and dislikes are, without a doubt. When searching for what your cat will most likely want, it is only a matter of finding the right pet supplier. What point is there in being owned by your cat if you cant give that little dictator its favourite toys? Remember that a cat views your furniture in much the same way as a cat scratcher which is why it may be in your best interest to cater to its feline instincts. When shopping online for pets it is possible to find almost anything feline and this is very good because it will delight your cat and provide a real boon for you.

Tablet computers: Samsung wins round against Apple

Tablet computers from Samsung had been banned in Germany because they were too much like Apple's iPad 2. But a German court has OK'd sales of new Samsung tablet computers ? the Galaxy Tab 10.1N ? despite Apple's objection.?

By Associated Press / February 13, 2012

In this 2011 file photo, a lawyer holds Apple and Samsung tablet computers at a court in Duesseldorf, Germany. Germany originally banned sales of Samsung's Galaxy Tab 10.1 because it too closely resembled Apple's iPad 2. But ths past week, a German court ruled Samsung could sell the Galaxy Tab 10.1N, because Samsung had made enough modifications to the design.

News agency dapd reported that the state court in Duesseldorf rejected Thursday Apple's call for an injunction preventing sales of the Galaxy Tab 10.1N in Germany.

An appeals court in Duesseldorf last month ruled Samsung couldn't sell the?computer's?predecessor, the Galaxy Tab 10.1, in Germany because it too closely resembled Apple's iPad2.

Thursday's ruling said Samsung had changed the design to the extent that the new model did not breach Apple's rights or German competition laws.

UK to "robustly" defend Falklands, Argentina seeks U.N. aid (Reuters)

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) ? London's U.N. ambassador warned Argentina on Friday that Britain would "robustly" defend the Falkland Islands if necessary, but added that his country remained open to bilateral talks with Buenos Aires on any issue except the islands' sovereignty.

British Ambassador Mark Lyall Grant was speaking to reporters after Argentine Foreign Minister Hector Timerman met with U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and the president of the U.N. Security Council to ask for help in stopping what he said was Britain's "militarization of the South Atlantic."

"We are not looking to increase the war of words, but clearly if there is an attempt to take advantage of the 30th anniversary of the Falklands war by Argentina, then we will obviously defend our position and defend it robustly," Lyall Grant said.

The British envoy's comments came a day after British Prime Minister David Cameron vowed to defend the islands "properly.

Britain and Argentina fought a 10-week war over the Falkland Islands in 1982 after Argentina invaded the South Atlantic islands, which the Argentines call Las Malvinas. London has refused to start talks on sovereignty with Buenos Aires unless the 3,000 islanders want them.

Tensions have risen before the 30th anniversary of the Falklands conflict this year. Oil exploration by British companies off the islands has raised the stakes.

Timerman repeated accusations that surfaced in the British press about a nuclear submarine being sent to the South Atlantic. He said that bringing atomic weapons into the region violated Latin America's treaty banning the presence, pursuit or use of nuclear weapons.

Britain has signed two protocols to the 1967 treaty, according to which it vowed to support the maintenance of a nuclear-weapons-free zone across Latin America.

BRITAIN OPEN TO BILATERAL TALKS

Lyall Grant denied militarizing the region and said Britain had a "purely defensive military posture" for the islands. He neither confirmed nor denied reports a nuclear-armed British submarine is lurking around the Falklands.

"We do not comment on the disposition of nuclear weapons, submarines, et cetera," he said.

"But it is well known that ... as part of our overall defensive posture, there are submarines on patrol all around the world at any time. So it's not a question of anything new in what he (Timerman) is suggesting," Lyall Grant added.

Timerman said he welcomed Ban's offer to mediate in the dispute.

"Argentina agrees that the secretary-general should begin conversations with both countries so that we can sit down at a table ... to resolve this conflict in a peaceful way," he said.

Security Council action on Argentina's complaint is very unlikely given Britain's veto on the 15-nation panel.

Lyall Grant said Britain was open to bilateral talks with Argentina and there was no need for "third-party mediation." He said it was Buenos Aires, not London, that was preventing talks aimed at defusing the tensions between the two nations.

"We have always been open to dialogue with Argentina. ... We had a dialogue with Argentina and they broke it off," he said, adding that "we are not going to discuss sovereignty."

Lyall Grant said one of the problems in restarting talks with Buenos Aires was a 1994 amendment to Argentina's constitution requiring that the government seek sovereignty over the islands.

"We have made clear that we are not prepared to go into talks with the precondition that has been set in the Argentine constitution and discuss sovereignty over the heads of the people of the Falkland Islands," he said.

Argentina has also condemned British plans to deploy one of its most advanced destroyers, HMS Dauntless, to the area. It has also criticized the posting of Prince William, second in line to the British throne, to the islands as a military search-and-rescue pilot.

Science as Art ? Art as Science | Australian Science Communicators

27 February 2012to29 February 2012

Science and art are not as far apart as you may think. A long history of visualising science entwines the two disciplines. At ASC2012 delegates will be able to learn how to make use of science art and visualisation when communicating scientific concepts and explore the transition between pure science and pure art.

Illustrations and graphics have been critical to the advancement of science ever since the times of Leonardo DaVinci and Albrecht D?rer, who very efficiently used the universal language of images to document details of the natural world. ?Medical illustration allows the artist to edit the scene. You can even show what can?t be seen,? highlights Bang Wong, creative director of the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard. Data journalist David McCandless explains that in our modern society, ?suffering from information overload or data glut?, graphics can help to ?visualise information so we can see the patterns and connections that matter and allow us to focus only on the information that?s important?.

It is from these illustrations of scientific information that science art was born. Visual communication of science can be regarded as a continuum ranging from purely informative illustrations of scientific detail to artistic creations for entertainment purposes. ?To create effective visual communication is trying to hit the right spot in that continuum that matches the purpose of the communication and also the audience that you?re targeting,? elaborates Wong. However, the location of a visual on this continuum also depends on who watches it. ?People see in it what they see in it. They may or may not notice [certain details],? he explains and McCandless remarks that ?failing [its informative purpose], visualised information can just look really cool.?

Besides inspiration, modern science provides artists with novel techniques and materials to experiment with. The result is a fascinating array of projects ranging from weird to wonderful. The question, however, is, which role can and do these art projects play in the communication of science.

A highly interactive session at ASC2012 will explore this question and discuss ways to increase the communicative aspect of science art. An exhibition of science art throughout the three days of the conference will showcase the work of scientists and science artists and illustrate the ?continuum of science visualisation?. Creators of science visuals are encouraged to <a title="Kate Patterson" href="mailto:Kate Patterson ?>contact the organiser to have their work included in the exhibition.

Senator urges lobbying against money market reform (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? Senator Pat Toomey is urging businesses to push back against efforts by U.S. securities regulators to impose new rules on the money market fund industry, which he says could "wipe out" the products.

Speaking to an audience at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday, he expressed frustration that the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission is trying to move ahead on sweeping money market fund reforms.

"I think that money market funds are under attack. I think there is a concerted effort to impose very, very, very troublesome regulations that in some cases I think do threaten the viability of the product itself," said Toomey, a Pennsylvania Republican and member of the Senate Banking Committee.

"I think we should push back very aggressively."

Toomey said he would consider introducing legislation pushing back on the reforms, if necessary.

The $2.6 trillion money market fund industry came under scrutiny during the financial crisis after a run on the Reserve Primary Fund caused it to "break the buck" when its net asset value fell below the $1-per-share mark.

The SEC moved to shore up the industry with new regulations in 2010, including tightening credit quality standards, shortening the maturities of fund investments and imposing a new liquidity requirement.

But SEC Chairman Mary Schapiro and banking regulators have said those are not enough. Staff at the SEC last month circulated two early draft plans for either a capital buffer coupled with a holdback on redemptions or a floating fund valuation.

The two competing plans have met with some resistance internally from three SEC commissioners, and they have also prompted a major backlash from money market fund industry players and U.S. businesses that rely on the funds for their short-term funding needs.

Critics say the recent regulations adopted in 2010 have worked well so far, and that money market funds have since weathered some major storms such as the European debt crisis.

They also fear redemption holdbacks, capital buffers or other changes could drive investors out of money market funds into bank accounts.

There have also been warnings that the reforms intended to reduce risk could unintentionally do the opposite by stoking another round of consolidation in the industry.

On Tuesday, the U.S. Chamber and a group of corporate treasurers took to Capitol Hill to meet with lawmakers to discuss their concerns about the money market fund proposals. Later on Wednesday, they are expected to head to meetings with U.S. regulators.

Toomey said if the SEC proceeds with some of the reforms in the works, he will call for congressional hearings to "give as much public scrutiny to this as possible."

Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine

DALLAS (February 9, 2012) In a study to be presented today at the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine's annual meeting, The Pregnancy Meeting , in Dallas, Texas, researchers will report findings that indicate that prescription medications may affect the body's ability to metabolize 17-alpha-hydroxyprogesterone caproate (17-OHPC), the only FDA approved medication for the prevention of recurrent preterm birth.

While 17-OHPC is routinely prescribed, much is still unknown about how it works. Studies have shown a large variation in the concentration of 17-OHPC present in women treated with the standard dose of the medication. It is known that 17-OHPC is metabolized by the CYP3A4 enzyme, which is also responsible for the metabolism of many prescription medications. This study, Effect of Prescription Medications on 17-Alpha-Hydroxyprogesterone Caproate (17-OHPC) Metabolism, sought to determine whether prescription medications can alter the metabolism of 17-OHPC and contribute to the variability of 17-OHPC concentration observed in women taking the same dose.

"We conducted an in vitro experiment to examine the effect of 25 different prescription medications on the metabolism of 17-OHPC. Over half of the drugs inhibited 17-OHPC metabolism by 50 percent or more," said Courtney Cuppett, MD, with the Magee-Womens Hospital, University of Pittsburgh, Maternal Fetal Medicine, Pittsburgh, Pa., and one of the study's authors. "This indicates that prescription medications may indeed affect 17-OHPC metabolism."

The findings indicate that if a therapeutic level is defined for 17-OHPC, doses may have to be adjusted if certain other medications are also being taken. Whether or not there is a converse interaction with 17-OHPC inhibiting the metabolism of prescription medications requires further exploration.

The study, conducted by Cuppett and Yang Zhao and Raman Venkataramanan, University of Pittsburgh, School of Pharmacy, Pittsburgh, Pa., and Steve Caritis with Magee-Womens Hospital, University of Pittsburgh, Maternal Fetal Medicine, Pittsburgh, Pa., was supported by a National Institute of Child Health and Human Development Obstetric-Fetal Pharmacology Research Unit Network grant.

(AP) ? Thousands of Syrians waving Russian flags cheered Russia's foreign minister as he arrived in Damascus Tuesday for talks with embattled President Bashar Assad on the country's escalating violence.

Sergey Lavrov's visit comes days after Syrian allies Russia and China vetoed a Western- and Arab-backed resolution at the United Nations that would have condemned the Assad regime's crackdown on dissent and calling on him to transfer some of his powers to his deputy. The Syrian government had rejected the Arab plan as intervention in Syria's internal affairs.

Regime forces, meanwhile, stepped up an assault on the flashpoint city of Homs, using tanks and machine guns in a push to recover rebel-held districts.

Live footage from the capital showed Lavrov's convoy snaking its way along the Mazzeh boulevard among a sea of Assad supporters who turned up to express gratitude for Moscow's supportive stance. The foreign minister and Russia's foreign intelligence chief Mikhail Fradkov were headed to the presidential palace to meet with Assad.

"Thank you Russia and China" read one banner that had the photos of both Assad and the Russian president. Many stood under rain carrying Syrian flags as well as the red, blue and white Russian banner and balloons.

More than 5,400 people have been killed in Syria since the uprising began in March, the U.N. said early last month. Hundreds more are believe to have been killed since then, but the U.N. says the chaos in the country has made it impossible to cross-check the figures.

Syria has blocked access to trouble spots and prevented independent reporting, making it nearly impossible to verify accounts from either side. The Assad regime says terrorists acting out a foreign conspiracy to destabilize the country are behind the uprising, not people seeking to transform the authoritarian regime.

On Monday, troops shelled a makeshift medical clinic and residential areas, killing nearly 70 people, activists said. More than a dozen others were reported killed elsewhere.

The escalating violence prompted the United States to close its embassy in Syria while Britain recalled its ambassador to Damascus in a clear message that Western powers see no point in engaging with Assad and now will seek to bolster Syria's opposition.

"This is a doomed regime as well as a murdering regime," British Foreign Secretary William Hague told lawmakers Monday. "There is no way it can recover its credibility internationally."

President Barack Obama said the Syrian leader's departure is only a matter of time.

"I am here to thank Russia for its stand in the face of the world conspiracy against Syria," said Manya Abbad, 45, as she waited for Lavrov's convoy Tuesday. "I wish the Arabs adopted similar stances."

Even as the U.S. steps up pressure on Assad to halt the violence and relinquish power, Obama said a negotiated solution was possible, without recourse to outside military intervention.

Later, however, White House spokesman Jay Carney said the administration was taking "no options off the table."

U.S. Ambassador Robert Ford and 17 other U.S. officials left Syria on Monday, arriving in Amman, Jordan, several hours later. Ford was to travel on to Paris to spend time with his wife, the State Department said.

Romney works to fend off Santorum challenge

(AP) ? Sensing a possible threat, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney criticized rival Rick Santorum's time in the Senate as "not effective" because of his past support for spending on pork-barrel projects as he worked to fend off an unexpected challenge in the next states to vote.

Santorum countered that Romney "should not be our nominee" because he was "dead wrong on the most important issue of the day" when, as governor, he signed a health care overhaul into law in Massachusetts.

The two sparred from afar one day before Republicans in Colorado and Minnesota hold nominating caucuses, the latest contests in what's become almost a plodding race for the GOP nomination compared to the rapid-fire campaign of last month. Newt Gingrich and Ron Paul also are competing but neither was expected to have a breakout performance in either state.

Romney, who won both states four years ago, hopes to extend his winning streak though advisers acknowledged that a first-place finish would be more likely to come by in Colorado than in Minnesota. The Republican Party in Minnesota has become more conservative in recent years and Santorum's strong conservative positions on social issues could resonate with the state's strong contingent of evangelical voters.

Santorum, a Catholic, has a strong anti-abortion record and consistently focuses on the issue. Romney, who once supported abortion rights, has struggled to win over those voters. But in a sign that he's trying to do just that, Romney's campaign on Monday rolled out a petition focusing on religious liberty. The move was intended to challenge a recent Obama administration decision to require hospitals to distribute free birth control, a policy at odds with the religious teachings followed at many Catholic health care facilities.

Romney said the policy forced Catholics to distribute "abortive pills."

Clearly mindful of the shift in Minnesota, Santorum has been working that state and conservative areas of Colorado aggressively in the past two weeks while Romney campaigned in Florida and Nevada and scored back-to-back victories. It was clear Monday that Santorum saw an opportunity to rise in the GOP race.

In an appearance across the street from the highly regarded Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., Santorum assailed Romney with gusto and said that making him the nominee would be "a devastating thing" for Republicans who want to see President Barack Obama lose in the fall.

He also complained that Romney was running an attack machine ? and turning it on him. "Any time someone challenges Gov. Romney, Gov. Romney goes out and instead of talking about what he's for ... he just simply goes out and attacks and tries to destroy," Santorum said.

At his own rally on the eve of the contests, Santorum urged supporters to redouble their efforts.

"Your charge is to go out and talk to folks in the next 24 hours," he said. "Talk to them about a candidate who understands what's at stake in this election."

To squelch any rise by Santorum, Romney's campaign spent the second day in a row holding a round of conference calls hosted by surrogates and issuing a spate of news releases accusing Santorum of seeking earmarks when he represented Pennsylvania in the Senate.

Romney, himself, weighed in during an interview with WCCO radio in Minneapolis, saying of Santorum: "His policies are, in my view, those of many Republicans in Congress who went along with Democrats to raise the debt ceiling, to allowing earmarks and to growing the size of federal government to a level that is frankly choking off the capacity of our economy to grow at the rate it should."

"I think his approach was not effective and, frankly, I happen to believe if we're going to change Washington we can't just keep on sending the same people there in different chairs."

At the same time, allies also worked to lower expectations for a Romney victory in Minnesota. The state is unpredictable given its small, conservative electorate with a strong evangelical Christian component. And even though Romney won in Minnesota four years ago, advisers point out that he ran as the conservative alternative to John McCain, who then was the front-runner and eventually became the nominee in 2008.

"Mitt will be competitive but it's hard to tell who's going to be at the top of the pack," former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, a Romney supporter, said in a conference call with reporters. He said Minnesota GOP caucus-goers "tend to gravitate to the perceived most conservative candidate" and that Romney was "not perfect but conservative."

Romney campaigned in Minnesota a week ago but, in a sign he didn't expect to win, scrapped an appearance at a Minneapolis rally Monday morning in favor of campaigning in Colorado.

Asked if he expects to win in Minnesota, Romney told WCCO radio, "I sure hope so."

In the evening, Romney maintained a front-runner's posture and targeted only Obama at a rally in Centennial, Colo.

"He said he deserves a second term. Can you believe that?" Romney asked a crowd of almost 3,000 gathered at the Arapahoe High School. That was in response to Obama, who said Sunday during a nationally televised interview, "I deserve a second term, but we're not done."

As he had earlier in the day, Romney emphasized the "protection of life" as a core American value during the portion of his usual campaign speech that focuses on America's national hymns.

He planned to spend caucus day in Colorado. Before leaving the high school gymnasium, he made a final appeal: "Don't forget to caucus! I need every vote."

Gingrich, who also campaigned in Colorado on Monday, attacked Romney's record in Massachusetts and said he "basically accommodated liberal Democrats." He added that Romney isn't a person "who goes in there with a force of will" to change the status quo.

Gingrich has little organization in any of the states that vote this week and is instead looking ahead to the spate of Southern states that vote on Super Tuesday, March 6.

The former House speaker told hundreds at a rally in Bloomington, Minn., that the nation needs a stark choice for the fall and Romney doesn't offer one.

"This is the thing that is very hard for the Republican establishment to understand: You cannot stop the decay without very serious difficult, political conflict in Washington," Gingrich said.

Speaking at a rally before more than 1,500 supporters at the Minneapolis Convention Center, Paul called for ending U.S. military involvement around the world and limiting the spending and influence of the federal government. He said he's called dangerous by his critics because he wants to shake up the status quo.

Memory Training: How You Can Boost Your Memory Capacity ...

You need to have a little understanding of memory before you could increase your memory. The personal computers we use nowadays have memory, just like our brains possess memory. You could think of your short-term memory as random access memory. A machine with insufficient RAM processes data slower, retrieves files more slowly, hangs often, and has less capacity to run multiple programs simultaneously. Don?t run your brain like a dimmable cfl. The net result of this will be that everything you try to do will take you much longer to do and will be quite inefficient, with the prospect of effective multi-tasking not being practical.

It is a mistake to believe that you?re stuck with your poor memory. It is only when you challenge your brain regularly with memory tasks that it becomes better at remembering things. There are a number of board games, electronic games, flash cards and programs created to be basically memory exercises. These can be interesting or fun, providing incentive to practice frequently, but there are a lot of ways you can exercise and stimulate your own memory, without spending a dime. The effort is totally worth it. Practicing daily just might help you develop a much stronger memory.

Make your mind do more of the work and count on your gadgets to do significantly less work for you. Think about whether or not you?re utilizing things like your appointment books and calendar programs as reminders or personal memory replacements. Do you actually have to use a phone book to call a person you?ve called in the past? Take time to think about what you remember from a meeting before you go over what you wrote down. if you practice often you will even start to surprise yourself!

You can create your own memory exams. You may even play a game where you leave out a set of things every morning and then try to remember where each is before you get home later in the day. Make an attempt to memorize a poem or important text every day. When you go shopping, read the label on a product when you enter the retail store. After some minutes try to recite back all you saw on the product package. Go back and check your answers to find out how well you did.

You won?t have to be a genius to recognize that the things we do often are the things we?re the best at doing. Though your mind seems abstract, it operates as an organ with physical form and requirements. An optimal lifestyle will promote optimal brain function, so make very good choices about eating, resting, and exercising. Daily exercise, for instance, is known to improve the circulation of important nutrients to the brain. There are thousands of nutrients in a healthy diet that work together to enhance optimal cognitive function.

Do not let your brain atrophy. Though training your memory isn?t particularly hard, it does require consistency. Let your mind have close to four weeks of memory training exercises prior to putting it to the test. There?s little doubt, besides a severe medical condition needing specialized treatment, that memory training exercises will begin to show benefits for you after a length of time.

(AP) ? Pakistan's prime minister will travel to Qatar next week to talk with leaders there about the prospect of a peace deal to end the war in Afghanistan, a government official said Saturday, a trip that suggests some progress in a process long stymied by mistrust.

The Afghan Taliban last month announced they would set up a political office in Qatar, which was seen as a major development in efforts to end an 11-year war that is taking an ever increasing toll on civilians. According to latest U.N. statistics, more than 3,000 Afghan civilians died in the war in 2011, the deadliest year on record for civilians in the Afghan war.

Neither side in the conflict, or regional governments with an interest in Afghanistan, have talked in detail about what shape any deal might take.

The Afghan Taliban ? far from defeated and with U.S. and Western nations committed to withdrawing troops from the country ? will presumably demand de-facto control over much of Afghanistan. That is assuming they agree to take part in substantive talks

The trip by Prime Minister Yousuf Reza Gilani on Monday comes amid unease in Kabul and Islamabad over the Taliban decision to open the Qatar office. Officials in both countries have said they fear they are being left out of the early stages of the peace process.

Last week, Pakistan's foreign minister traveled to Afghanistan to talk about what is termed in Washington, Islamabad and Kabul as "Afghan reconciliation."

"Our prime minister will have discussions connected to this with the Qatar leadership," foreign office spokesman Abdul Basit told a local television station. "He will also inform them of Pakistan's perspective in this situation."

Pakistan is an important player in moves to end the war because many of the leaders of the insurgency are said to be sheltering on its territory. The country's security forces are alleged to have links with the militants that could be useful in bringing them to the negotiating table.

Western officials, who have accused Pakistan of sponsoring militants behind attacks in Afghanistan, also says the country has the potential to wreck any peace deal if it is not involved. Pakistan's army wants to ensure that any post U.S regime in Afghanistan is hostile to India, which it regards as an existential threat.

The U.S. invaded Afghanistan after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks in the United States, seeking to destroy al-Qaida and the hardline Islamist Taliban regime that harbored the network. Afghanistan is no longer a haven for al-Qaida, but the U.S.-led alliance has struggled to hold ground against the Taliban, which is supported by significant pockets of population in the south and east.

Romney looks to boost front-runner status in Nevada (Reuters)

LAS VEGAS (Reuters) ? With a huge lead in polls, Republican front-runner Mitt Romney appeared poised for an easy win in Nevada on Saturday that would put him in firm command of the party's see-sawing presidential nominating race.

A Nevada victory would be Romney's second win in a row and his third in the first five contests in the state-by-state battle to find a Republican challenger to President Barack Obama in November's general election.

Two polls taken this week in Nevada showed the former Massachusetts governor with a lead of 20 points or more over top rival Newt Gingrich after recapturing his front-runner status with a convincing win in Florida on Tuesday.

The caucuses began at many of the 125 sites around Nevada on Saturday morning, although final results were not expected until after 7 p.m. PST (0300 Sunday GMT). A final gathering of voters to accommodate Jews observing the Sabbath on Saturday will begin in Las Vegas at that time.

Nevada, which has a faltering economy and a big Mormon population, is friendly territory for Romney, a Mormon and former head of a private equity firm. He captured 51 percent of the vote in 2008 to win the state during his failed 2008 presidential bid.

He has stressed his business background as a cure for the ailing economy in Nevada, which has the country's highest state unemployment rate, 12.6 percent in December, and the highest home foreclosure rate.

"This has been a tough three years," Romney told supporters in Henderson, Nevada, outside Las Vegas, on Friday night at his last campaign stop before the vote. "It's time now for Barack Obama to get out of the way."

Romney hopes Nevada's caucuses will launch a February winning streak that could position him for a knockout blow to Gingrich during the 10 "Super Tuesday" contests on March 6 - or even sooner.

Colorado, Minnesota and Missouri will have nominating contests on Tuesday. Maine will wrap up its weeklong caucuses next Saturday, and Arizona and Michigan hold February 28 contests.

Romney won Nevada, Colorado, Minnesota, Maine and Michigan during his failed 2008 presidential bid. He came in second in Arizona to native son and eventual nominee John McCain, an Arizona senator, and finished third in Missouri.

'PEOPLE POWER'

Gingrich is hoping to hang in the race until March, when there will be contests in several southern states where the former Georgia congressman and U.S. House of Representatives speaker believes he can do well.

At a campaign stop in Las Vegas on Friday Gingrich called himself "the candidate of people power versus money power," returning to his theme that Romney is a flawed product of the elite and a Wall Street favorite.

But some Romney supporters say they are not turned off by his vast wealth even though Gingrich has made it a campaign issue. They said Romney had the best chance to beat Obama.

"I think he's the only one who can beat Obama," said George Peterson, a retired Air Force veteran who attended a caucus at Chaparral High School in Las Vegas.

Gayle Darin, another voter at the caucus, said she thought it was time for Republicans to pick a candidate and take aim at Obama. "A lot of people have rallied behind Romney now," she said. "We've got to step up and get Obama out of office."

Ernie Prosch said he liked Gingrich's ideas for turning around the economy.

"What the country needs is somebody to come up with ideas on how to get jobs," the retired airline pilot said. "I don't think you need to be a businessman to do that, and I don't think you need millions."

During the caucus at the high school, voters broke into small groups by precinct to elect delegates to the county convention in March and cast ballots in the presidential race.

In the precinct that Darin, Prosch and Peterson attended, the final tally was 12 for Romney, seven for U.S. Representative Ron Paul, three for Gingrich and none for former U.S. Senator Rick Santorum.

Paul and Santorum also have pledged to keep fighting beyond Nevada. Santorum will campaign in Colorado on Saturday, and Paul will visit Minnesota.

Romney will turn his attention to the next round with a visit to Colorado on Saturday afternoon before returning to Las Vegas for what he hopes is a victory party on Saturday night.

France opens inquiry into Costa Concordia shipwreck (Reuters)

PARIS (Reuters) ? The Paris prosecutor's office opened a preliminary inquiry on Thursday into the causes of the Costa Concordia cruise ship disaster in Italy last month, following a decision to group together legal complaints by relatives of French victims.

The prosecutor's office said survivors of the shipwreck off the Tuscan coast would be questioned in the investigation, as it seeks to establish whether there are criminal liabilities in the case and assess psychological damage caused by the accident.

Four French nationals were among the 17 casualties whose bodies were recovered after the 114,500-tonne Costa Concordia hit a rock.

Some 15 people, two of them French, are still unaccounted for and a criminal investigation is under way in Italy, with the cruise ship's captain, Francesco Schettino, facing charges of multiple manslaughter and abandoning ship before the evacuation of more than 4,200 passengers and crew was complete.

Costa Cruises has offered 11,000 euros ($14,500) in compensation to each of the passengers aboard the liner, in a bid to limit the legal fallout of the accident, but that has not stopped a flurry of legal complaints being filed around France.

There were 462 French people on board the cruise. After meeting last week with representatives of a victims' association based near the city of Bordeaux, the French justice ministry took a decision to group all the French complaints together.

The French inquiry could run in parallel with the Italian inquiry or be used to complement it.

Costa Cruises is a unit of Miami-based Carnival Corp., the world's biggest cruise operator.

Consider Student Loan Debt Carefully - Memphis Daily News

VOL. 127 | NO. 22 | Thursday, February 02, 2012

Dana and Ray Brandon

By Ray and Dana Brandon

Ray?s Take Student loan debt in this country now totals over $920 billion; that out-distances total credit card debt by $120 billion. Even more alarmingly, this is a 10,000 percent increase in a mere 14 years. That?s a huge headwind for young people who are just starting to find their financial footing.

So, are student loans to be avoided? Not always, but they should be considered carefully and shopped for thoughtfully.

Keep in mind that college graduates earn an average of $1.3 million more over their lifetimes than those whose education ended with high school. However, most of that earning power comes later in life, not during the early years when loans must be repaid. Besides, that is an average, which means for many college grads that extra debt load may not pay off.

The decision to apply for student loans should be approached in a business-like manner: Can you expect a worthwhile return on your college investment that would justify this expense? Or do you need to consider alternatives, such as postponing college for a year to earn money or starting out at a less expensive community college?

The answer depends largely on the degree being pursued and how the workplace rewards that degree. Financial compensation is certainly not as important as a career that provides personal fulfillment. However, it may not be the best plan to go into a field with low-income expectations burdened with student loan repayments.

In addition, it?s important to shop carefully for loans. While federal student loans can have interest rates as low as 3.4 percent, private lenders are charging rates as high as 18 percent or more. That?s a huge difference.

Bottom line: If a student loan is necessary to help a young person earn a college degree that will improve his life, slow down. Just consider it carefully because that loan will have to be paid back. And soon.

Dana?s Take I?m a big believer in the pay-as-you-go method when it comes to financing college. If not enough money has been saved to cover the cost, then compromises need to be made.

There are certainly plenty of options to avoid putting oneself in debt. Two possibilities are working part-time or going to school part-time. Opting for a less expensive college or going to a local college and living at home are two others.

There are a number of ways to reduce or postpone college expenses before considering going into debt. Each and every one of them needs to be honestly considered before opting for the ?money now, pay later? of a student loan.

The last thing young people need when starting their careers and establishing their households is a mountain of debt looming over them.

While a student loan can be helpful, not having to repay one can be priceless.
